 | Oct 18, 2009 8:00 pm - Food for Your New Puppy - How to Feed Healthy and Nutritious The most important time to feed great food is when your puppy is young. Great nutrition helps build a solid foundation, upon which your puppy can live long and prosper.
Puppies, as a general rule, require high protein, balanced fat, mineral-rich diets (giant breed dog owners should discuss food with their vets and breeders). Not all raw diets are high protein: some popular, lower-cost raw diets are mostly fat, and probably should not be fed to puppies.
The actual fat content of a dog food is not always shown on the label because fat is listed as a minimum. A label can read “6% fat (minimum)” and actually be 18% fat! The best way to tell how much fat is in a raw diet is to go to the company’s website and find out the amount of calories per ounce in the product. Lean, high protein foods appropriate for puppies should have 25 to 40 kcal/ ounce, while the fatty foods, which should probably not be fed to puppies (or any dog, in my opinion), have 50 to 65 kcal per ounce. (Fat has more than twice the calories per ounce than protein).
It’s also important to feed puppies a variety of healthy foods, rotating the different meat and fat sources, so they get accustomed to eating almost anything. Many puppies brought up on just one food have difficulty adjusting to variety of foods later in life. Variety is natural and healthy. Just as you would not want your child to eat just one food all the time, you should not feed your puppy one food all the time.
In a future blog, I’ll write more about the importance of rotating meat and fat sources for a healthy brain. That’s the topic of my new book, The Canine Ancestral Diet: One Day a Week to a Healthier Dog, which will soon be published by Dogwise Publishing.

I caught it myself, and ate it all, well except for a wing. That was a mistake. My owner found it. She was angry at me, when she realized it was an owl wing. Ohhh, owners, they never understand, do they? Oh well its an achievemt for me anyway.Add a Reply -- REPLIES --

Aug 22, 2009 3:45 pm - Owl snacks
Hi Midnight.
You sound like a mighty hunter. Owl snacks sound really good - I live inside, and when I want snacks, I get my mommy to broil some chicken or open a can of tuna. I hope your "owner" let you keep a few feathers as souvenirs!
Well done.

 | Aug 03, 2009 3:03 am - I’m fit enough for my standards! My favourite thing to do is... drumroll... sleep! ohh yeah. if you don’t sleep, you should try it sometime. It is so... relaxing. Ohh yeah, today, though I was out and about, playing and hunting. So see I’m not as lazy as I look. I’m sure i’m not the only one who enjoys a sleep every so often. Okay, Okay so I snooze a little more then that, but then agian, who doesn’t?Add a Reply |
 | Jul 26, 2009 9:06 am - Ahem. Hiya diary! It’s me again. ^_^
I was really good during Rachel’s grooming. I just let her groom me. Rachel was lighter than she usually was, that’s because she didn’t get enough sleep last night due to not taking her meds. Apparently medication are these weird looking shaped items that humans take to make them function. I’m lucky I don’t need that stuff! So is JayJay.
I don’t want summer to end. JayJay and I really like summer and spring because that means WALKS! STEAK! REALLY GOOD STUFF! That we can’t do in the winter time. =(
Take it from me. A nice steak after a summer walk is much better than staying inside due to crappy snow and not having steak.Add a Reply |
 | Jul 26, 2009 9:01 am - Nature Nature’s beautiful! Flower pots to pee on, flowers.......Uh oh, Mom caught me trying to pee on the flower pot. And trees, the air........Why would humans try to pollute the air and ground with litter, radio noise and nuclear waste? That’s not very kind of them. Anyways, I think the humans sometimes take nature for granted.
Gotta defend my territory. RUFF! RUFF RUFF ARF!Add a Reply |
 | Jul 24, 2009 3:54 pm - Pukey Wukey. I puked today. Of course after all that puking, I wanted food. Food is awesome. I love food. I don’t know what I puked up- dog poop, bunny poop or just plain dog food? I don’t have the sharpest memory in the world.
Anyways, I use my humans as servants. I had Mom clean up my puke. I mean, isn’t that what humans are supposed to do?
Sincerely,
Benji
P.S I had double dinner. Yum! ^_^Add a Reply |
 | Jul 24, 2009 3:47 pm - Another Beautiful Day. Today is a great day! Just like usual. The stereotype "senior dogs are no fun, boring, and always cranky" is not true. I am a very happy senior dog, most of my days are great! Being a senior is really enjoyable (I hope Benji understands what I mean when he gets to be my age). Speaking of which, I love lying down inside my house where the sun is, like a cat. That doesn’t mean I like cat food and cat toys (Yuck). I still love a good walk, food, treats like any other senior dog and need my heartworm medication.Add a Reply |
 | Jul 23, 2009 7:30 am - Another Doggie Diary Entry Nervous. So nervous. I’m shaking like a leaf here. O_O
Are my humans going to be mad at me? No....it seems like Rachel is going to let me out in the rain. OK, I’m brave enough to do this! Without JayJay too! ^_^
Yay! Rachel lets me in, and I’m on the couch now. I lick my bummy, and Rachel says not to lick my bummy. I don’t get humans sometimes? What’s wrong with a little "Doggie Bum-Bum Couture"? Nervous again. Nervous O_o
Ok, I’m calm now. =)Add a Reply |
 | Jul 23, 2009 7:26 am - I will NOT go out in the rain. Really, it’s just ridiculous. Rain leads to lightning and thunder. I really gotta go, but I think I can hold it. I’ll just take a nap instead. I think Rachel wants me to have the "wet dog" smell to see how I smell like with "wet dog" fur and not get hurt. Well, I don’t really like rain. Maybe I can go out later when it’s much safer. I’m a smart dog like that.
Sincerely,
JayJayAd a Reply |
 | Jul 21, 2009 11:09 am - Lhasa Love My family loves me. My favorite time of the day is morning, where I get my first meal by Mom. I wasn’t let out with Benji when Mom and Rachel left for a little while, again (why do humans always make these short trips? In the car, too. I hate cars). When they came back, Rachel thought I pooped downstairs and I didn’t (Her glasses were off, she doesn’t see good without them).
I was so happy to see Mom and Rachel come home along with Benji. I wonder if they had a good time?Add a Reply |
