I keep hearing the Hindu and the Furry Lover in my programming class talking about Linux and I’ve head OF it but what the fuck does it do/what do you do with it
And don’t just copy some shit off wikipedia down, I want REAL TALK, not regurgitated lines of tech shit. Keep it simple and it all be cool.

It is an OS for people who dont like Windows, cause they think Windows is "The Devil", for people who like to hack, or for people who cant afford Windows.

Linux is an operating system. It’s hard to install, and it’s main advantage is the ability to say "I run linux".

i installed fedora core 5 onto an old pc of mine, with no problems.
the problem’s finding drivers for most PCs

Correction, it’s an alternative.
Linux is a great place to start off in the computing world. It’s free, it’s fast, you can do almost anything and almost all software is free and opensource. When you are finished with linux, you can step up to the more complex Unix which is mostly backwards-compatible with linux.
Here’s a good starting point. Ubuntu is free (postage is free too), widely supported and even if you don’t want to install it yet you can boot the OS right off the cd!

Linux is an operating system that is entirely open source (meaning you can modify and compile anything on it .. yourself)
I also would recommend Ubuntu, it works on most new pc’s from my experience with it.
Linux is a branch of the unix os.... freebsd is great (runs linux)

But you can’t use that many programs on Linuxs. That’s the only reason I didn’t bother ordering that Ubuntu CD.

Thats true, with wine you can run some windows programs.... not easy to do.
Why order? isn’t it easier to just download it via torrent?

Linux has gimp which from what I heard is as good as photoshop...

It’s right on par. I worked on my avatar using that program and there is also some kick-ass 3D rendering apps out there.
It also connects to a windows network no problem.

Our household runs on nothing but Linux, Mister Garg is a Linux Programmer and dev.
He has contributed lots of code to the newest version of ubuntu and even things that you all would notice! Like the way things open and how shadows fall behind the windows that you open.
Linux works great fo us and we’ve never had any problems.
We havnt had to reboot any of our computers since we got Linux and that was about 3 years ago.
It never crashes, and our three main computers are always on. (and yes i know i just said that we have THREE computers, but hey i live with a programmer)
Thats not including our two laptops.
All run on Linux....
And i regularly use Gimp for all kinds of stuff, it works just as good as photo shop if not better to be honest.
